Yafang Shi Women’s Voices, Censorship, and Resistance

Women’s Voices, Censorship, and Resistance was triggered by the lived experiences of Yafang Shi, a photographer, poet, and journalist based in Aurora, located on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples whose presence here continues to this day. This exhibition is informed by her observations and reflections on feminist movements and activism, both locally and globally. 

Through striking images of flowers and fences paired with poignant yet fierce poetry, Shi brings awareness to the censorship that authoritarian states impose on women’s voices, as well as the institutional barriers that women, especially those of colour, face when they try to make their voices heard in Western democratic societies.

The exhibition also shows women’s determined and tenacious resistance to censorship and barriers facing them when they speak out.
