Magnum In Motion

Memory is very important, the memory of each
photo taken, flowing at the same speed as the
event. During the work, you have to be sure that
you haven’t left any holes, that you’ve captured
everything, because afterwards it will be too
late.

– Henri Cartier-Bresson – American Photo,
September/October 1997

For 31 consecutive evenings during CONTACT, Magnum
In Motion will project short documentary style
films from the Magnum Photos agency, in the front
windows of the Drake Hotel. Video segments, audio
commentary and soundtracks, by and about Magnum
photographers, reflects the global experiences of
the agency’s members.

Magnum Photos is one of the most prestigious
photographic agencies in the world. Representing
only 60 members worldwide, it is a cooperative
organization fully owned and directed by the
photographers. It was founded in 1947 following
the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Henri
Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David “Chim”
Seymour, who had been scarred by the conflict and
became motivated to reflect their experiences
without having to suffer the dictates of a single
publication and its editorial staff.

Since this time Magnum has created some of the
most iconic images we know today – from Capa’s
first uncensored look behind the Iron Curtain and
Cartier-Bresson’s landmark coverage of India at
the time of Gandhi’s assassination, to Dennis
Stock’s images of James Dean walking alone in
Time’s Square in the rain and Eve Arnold’s
enduring images of Marilyn Monroe. Today, Magnum
photographers continue to document significant
events with honesty and authorship, covering
society and people, places of interest, politics
and current events, disasters and conflict around
the world.

Magnum In Motion, founded in 2004 by French
creative director Claudine Boeglin and Danish
journalist Bjarke Myrthu, is the interactive
digital studio of Magnum Photos. A team of video
producers, Flash editors, and web producers take
the Magnum experience online with stories that
range from photographers’ behind-the-scenes,
first-hand accounts to thematic essays on
thought-provoking topics.

The Magnum In Motion team from New York will be
present during the opening week of CONTACT to
create a specific piece on the festival for the
Magnum archive.
