Jason Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez CARLOS & JASON SANCHEZ

The photographs by brothers Carlos and Jason Sanchez are meticulously planned yet have the look of spontaneously captured reportage. Each image is a staged tableau exploring the darker facets of modern life. Some refer to events well-known through mass media, while others are less specific but possess a strange familiarity. In each one, the Sanchez brothers depict turbulence with incredible stillness. This exhibition includes the artists’ most challenging subjects to date, such as a concentration camp gas chamber and the A-Bomb Dome in Hiroshima. Their use of dramatic lighting makes reference to Old Master painting with an emphasis on richness of detail and harmony of arrangement. Their goal is to open up a space for contemplation in the moment between recognition and reaction. Continuing the long history of humanity’s fascination with death, the Sanchez brothers confront a society defined by war and ubiquitous images of conflict.

Carlos and Jason Sanchez live in Montreal. Recent exhibitions include the Quebec Triennale at the Musee d’art Contemporain de Montreal in 2008; Darkside I at the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Zurich in 2008; Start at Zaum Projects Contemporary Art, Lisbon in 2008; Reality Interrupted: the Cinematic Work of the Sanchez Brothers at the Houston Center for Photography, Texas in 2007.
