Suzy Lake Extended Breath
Since the 1970s, Suzy Lake has been known for groundbreaking and influential explorations of female identity. She later shifted focus to non-narrative portraits of roses standing in as metaphors for beauty and aging. In her current backlit series, Extended Breath, Lake works with slow shutter speeds and long exposures to record durational performances. She pushes the parameters of analogue photography, resulting in perceptually flattened spaces that resonate with colour. As the artist’s body is subsumed into the image’s surface, her experience materializes as visual phenomena. With characteristic incisiveness, Lake’s performances reveal the intimate relationship of one’s self to the body, within a cultivated natural setting.
