Laverty created these images in northern Ontario, specifically, along Highways 11 and 17. Both are part of the Trans-Canada Highway. Many of the towns in this region—Hearst, Kapuskasing, Cobalt—thrived because of logging and mining. Since the 1970s, the population and economy of the towns along these highways has been in steady decline. What were once vibrant communities, are now a little worse for wear. 11×17 depicts the region as it is today.
