David Kaufman The Posthumous Landscape: Jewish Historical Sites in Western Ukraine
May 2–Aug 31, 2017
Seventy-two years after the Holocaust, western Ukraine is still replete with remnants of Jewish life, even as the community’s history has vanished from popular consciousness. Kaufman’s photographs, created on a recent trip to Lviv, Chernivtsi, and surrounding towns, depict the region’s abundant but neglected Jewish material culture. These large-scale images vividly portray Jewish neighbourhoods, memorial sites, cemeteries, and synagogues, some in good condition, some adapted for other uses, some in a state of ruin.
