Tom Saater, Liz Ikiriko Project Development: Representation & Collaboration

Nigerian documentary photographer Tom Saater and Toronto-based photo editor/curator Liz Ikiriko will lead a two-day immersive editing workshop focusing on developing individual’s projects through group critiques. The workshop will address conceptual and practical issues of representation, collaboration, and the responsibility of the photographer. Saater will share his unique experiences working in Africa and the importance of relationship building with your subjects. Ikiriko will share her knowledge of reading images and the role of collaboration within editorial markets.

Please note that due to limited space, all submissions will go through a selection process. To register, please submit five (5) images from one body of work with a brief description of the project.

Tom Saater is a Nigerian documentary photographer and short-film maker. His work has been exhibited internationally at the International Centre of Photography Museum New York, University of Oxford UK, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Denmark, Venice Biennale, and Addis Foto Festival, among others. He has been commissioned and published by The New York Times, Japan Times, BBC, Human Rights Watch, WFP, UN, and Oxfam. He is a contributor on Everyday Africa @everydayafrica.

Liz Ikiriko is an independent curator and photo editor. She has worked on national publications including The Ethnic Aisle, Toronto Life, and Macleans. As a curator, she has organized exhibitions with BAND Gallery, Wedge Curatorial Projects, Sheridan College, and the National Music Centre. She has juried and reviewed portfolios at Ryerson University, CONTACT Photography Festival, Flash Forward Annual, and the CAP Prize for Contemporary African Photography. She is currently an MFA candidate in Criticism and Curatorial Practice at OCAD University in Toronto.
