Leala Hewak The Space Between

May 1–31,  2020

The tension between anxiety and unnerving calmness shapes the narrative of this exhibition by Toronto-based photographer Hewak, who identifies as a disabled/Mad artist. The Space Between focuses on empty public interiors: lobbies, schools, courthouses, country clubs, synagogues, hotels, etc. Drawn from Hewak’s series The Weight of Air, a 341-image study of buildings designed by Canadian modernist architect, Peter Dickinson (1925 – 1961) the images are stripped of their individual identifiers to their commonality—places we pass through.
