Yuriko Kubota Fragments – The Shōwa Era in Japan

For this exhibition, Yuriko Kubota focuses on the energy she felt growing up in Tokyo during the Shōwa era (1926-1989) along with her fragmented memories of her father, who passed away in 2020.

Her father was a typical Japanese salaryman, who, when the economy was growing, worked hard and drank harder. Kubota photographed images from Shōwa-era movies or newscasts, which connect her to this energy and these memories. She layers the images with mixed media to highlight and obscure, just like her recollection.

A new work will rotate weekly in Studio Little Red’s Gallery Box on Ward’s Island.
