Rafael Goldchain Journeys to the Imaginary

The images in the series I Am My Family represent reenactments of Rafael Goldchain’s ancestors, real and fictional. Goldchain’s self-portraits are fueled by the desire to remember, to mourn, to connect with his lost family, and with the world they lived in.

The images in the series Inventario are photographs of interiors featuring assemblages of images, objects, and painted walls that characterize the diversity of popular culture in Latin America in the 1980’s. Referencing the documentary style of Walker Evans, the images also nod to the magic-realist aesthetic of the Latin American literature of the late 20th century.
