Leala Hewak Saving Space
Leala Hewak made 70,000 photographs in 18 months as she visited dozens of modernist buildings designed by Peter Dickinson, many of which have since been demolished. Saving Space features a small selection. The images are informed by her complex relationship with collecting, space and place. Says Hewak, “If the space is large enough, perhaps it can be kept empty, empty of things which distract from happiness…But with space comes the urge to accumulate and fill…I see things, and I want them. [With] things that are rare or endangered, the impulse is irresistible. For me, the camera is a practical solution to the problem of storage.”
