Jodi Franklin The "Thing from the Sea"

A black object drifted through the Baltic Sea from Germany to Falsterbo, Sweden. It was then carried for three miles to Lund, Sweden.

Franklin imagines the “Thing from the Sea” as a petrified water snake. Re-arranged on a tulip table, it became an elegant sculpture. Waterlogged, morphed, and twisted, the Thing, was then verified upon closer inspection as a black plumbing pipe. Small white numbers and letters printed on its skin confirmed its identity.

This body of work reminds viewers about the threat of poisoning the oceans with plastic pollutants. Thoughtful recycling is a must—the only answer to this threat.
